This is a really cool, collaborative exhibit between two of Chicago’s best-known and most active institutions championing “outsider art.” What is outsider art, exactly? The name suggests something antithetical to the way the genre is celebrated by Chicago institutions, but on their website, Intuit defines outsider art as “work created by artists who faced marginalization, overcame personal odds to make their artwork, or who did not, or sometimes could not, follow a traditional path of art making, often using materials at hand to realize their artistic vision.”

Hand Drawn Circle: Arts of Life Studio Past and Present, brings together work by current and former artists utilizing the Arts of Life studio. Arts of Life, a 501(c)3 non-profit founded in 2000, has operated with a mission to provide intellectually and developmentally-disabled artists with a collective space to expand their practice and strengthen their leadership while pursuing artistic careers.

Intuit is located on an exciting stretch of West Town’s North Milwaukee Avenue, where you can take a self-guided tour of the Weinberg/Newton Gallery — which specializes in advocacy art exhibitions — or stop by A Very Serious Gallery to say hi to Allan before or after you explore Intuit.
